Navigation Computer - Velocity control
The Star Ship has two propulsion systems.
- Impulse engines to travel at sub-light velocities (impulse speed).
- Warp engines to travel at velocities above the speed of light (warp speed).
The propulsion systems are located on the Navigation panel, but their status, functionality and reliability
are taken care of by the Engineering Computer System.
To enter a new velocity, you first set the white Impulse/Warp switch to the desired propulsion system. The Impulse/Warp
switch is the leftmost switch on the panel. The "up" position is for Impulse engines, the "down" position is for Warp
engines. The upper yellow LED next to the switch is lit when the switch is in the "Impulse" position, the red LED is
lit when the switch is in the "Warp" position. The blue button is the "Establish Orbit Request" button.
So, when travelling at warp speed and you want to slow down to establish an orbit around a celestial object,
you set the switch to "Impulse".
After selecting the correct propulsion system you push the Velocity Request toggle button. The Velocity Request toggle
button is the white button next to the Impulse/Warp switch, both on the right-hand side console, bottom section.
Set Impulse speed velocity
To enter a new impulse (sub-light speed) velocity, the initial position of the Impulse/Warp switch must be in the "up"
position.
The leftmost grey value switch must also be in the "up" position. This switch is used to lock the new
setting.
When you push the Velocity Request toggle button the Navigation Computer starts the "set new impulse speed" dialog.
The valid impulse velocity ranges from 0,00 up to 0,99. The increment step is 0,01.
The Velocity Display changes to a value corresponding to the setting of the grey value switches.
When the value switches are set to a value greater than 99, the Velocity Display shows "- - -".
The Impulse engine indicator in the Velocity Display flashes to indicate the "set new impulse speed"
dialog is activated and the entry of the new impulse velocity is expected.
When the desired impulse velocity is entered with the value switches you set the first (left-hand) value switch in the
"down" position. This locks the new impulse velocity into the Navigation Computer.
Depending the current velocity of the Star Ship, the Star Ship will accelerate or decelerate gradually to the new
velocity.
The Navigation Computer issues a message in the status line of the Navigation Screen for the
following situations.
- When the operational status of the impulse engines is below the requested speed, because of for example less than
100% functional status, the message new velocity adjusted to impulse engines maximum available is given.
- When the Star Ship orbits a celestial object, the message in orbit: velocity change not allowed is given.
When the Star Ship is traveling at warp speed, and the new setting is a sub-light velocity, the warp engines drive will
decrease. At the transition from 1,0 warp to 0,99 impulse speed the Warp engine indicator in the Velocity Display goes
off and the Impulse engine indicator in the Velocity Display is turned on. If the main screen is allocated to the port
view, the stars "smear" for a few seconds a trail on the screen as an effect of dropping out of warp speed.
The "set new impulse speed" dialog can be aborted at any moment by switching the Impulse/Warp switch to the other
position. The Navigation Computer issues a velocity change rejected message
(new velocity entry rejected, current velocity maintained) in the status line of the Navigation Screen, and
the current velocity is maintained.
Set Warp speed velocity
To enter a new warp velocity, the initial position of the Impulse/Warp switch must be in the "down" position.
The leftmost grey value switch must also be in the "up" position. This switch is used to lock the new
setting.
When you push the Velocity Request toggle button the Navigation Computer starts the "set new warp speed" dialog.
The valid warp velocity ranges from 1,0 upto 12,9. The increment step is 0,1.
The velocity display changes to a value corresponding to the setting of the value switches.
When the value switches are set to a value lower than 10, the velocity display shows "- - -".
The Warp engine indicator in the Velocity Display flashes to indicate the "set new warp speed" dialog is activated
and the entry of the warp velocity is expected.
When the desired warp velocity is entered with the value switches you set the first (left-hand) value switch in the
"down" position. This locks the new warp velocity into the Navigation Computer.
Depending the current velocity of the Star Ship, the Star Ship will accelerate or decelerate gradually to the new
velocity. The Navigation Computer issues a message in the status line of the Navigation Screen for the
following situations.
- When the operational status of the warp engines is below the requested speed, because of for example less than
100% functional status, the message new velocity adjusted to warp engines maximum available is given.
- When the requested warp speed exceeds 6.0 warp, the warning message violating interstellar max warp speed
regulation is given.
When the Star Ship is traveling at impulse speed, and the new setting is a warp velocity, the impulse engines drive will
increase.
At the transition from 0,99 impulse to 1,0 warp speed, the Impulse engine indicator in the Velocity Display
goes off and the Warp engine indicator in the Velocity Display is turned on. If the main screen is allocated to the port
view, the stars "smear" for a few seconds a trail on the screen as an effect of jumping into warp speed.
The "set new warp speed" dialog can be aborted at any moment by switching the Impulse/Warp switch to the other
position. The Navigation Computer issues a velocity change rejected message
(new velocity entry rejected, current velocity maintained) in the status line of the Navigation Screen, and
the current velocity is maintained.
