Tactical Computer - Deflector shields

The Star Ship is equiped with deflector shields. When energy is supplied to the shields they have the capability to absorb energy that otherwise would damage the Space Ship. So the shields can decrease the destructive effect of a (photon) torpedo, a phaser blast or any other object. When energy is supplied to shields they are said to be 'raised'. The Star Ship has six separate shields: fore, aft, top, bottom, port and starboard. The Tactical Computer can supply energy to all shields (with constitutes of an average setting), or supply energy to just one specific shield.

Tactical computer command controls

For the deflector shields the following Tactical Computer commands are available.
  1. Set all six deflectors shields to a certain value (average).
  2. Set a specific deflector shield to a certain value.
  3. Show the current operational value of all deflectors shields (the average of all six).
  4. Show the current operational value of a specific deflector shield.
All deflector shield commands are activated with the Tactical Function/Location buttons.
Any tactical function is initiated by pressing the "TFR", Tactical Function Request button. The TFR button is the green one at the left. The Tactical Computer responds by switching the light on in the button. With the Function and Location buttons you can now specify the desired tactical subsystem, which in this case is the deflector shield subsystem, and which shield (or all shields).

Set deflector shield(s) strength

TFR        Function code           Location code         EXEC   deflector shield subsystem command
set all shields  set all deflector shields to an average setting
set specific shield  set the operational setting of a specific shield
   * see port table for specific locations

Set shield #4 on Tactical Entry Display The next step is to assign power to the selected deflector shield (or all).
Press the "TFR" button to indicate that the choice is entered.
As a result the lamp in the "TFR" button is turned off and the Tactical Entry Display with the keypad is activated.
The display shows the selected shield number or a small "o" (for overall) and the currently assigned strength. The range of the strength is from 0 [shield(s) down] to 1,99 [shield(s) raised at maximum].
Shield value out of range With the keypad you can enter a new setting.
If the entry value exceeds 1,99 the display shows "Error".

To correct an entry you press the red "*" key.
This key backs up to the entry of the previous entered digit.
When the entry is at the first digit, the "*" key effectively cancels the "Set deflector shield(s)" command.
Shield #4 set When the new set value is correct press the grey "X" key on the Tactical Keypad to execute the command. The shield(s) will be set to the new value, if possible. When the new entered value is higher than the currently possible operational status the shield(s) will be set to the maximum available operational status.
A message is shown in the status line on the CRT:
("shield set to functional maximum available").
After the command is executed the Tactical Entry Display is blanked. The Shields Display is updated automatically.

Show deflector shield(s) strength

show average setting  show averaged operational setting of all shields
show specific setting  show operational setting of a specific shield
   * see port table for specific locations

Shields Display value
As a result the current setting of the shield [1-6] or an average of all shields [A] is shown in the Shields Display.
The Shields Display group is located left of the Navigation Position Display. The picture shows the result from the above described "Set Shield #4", and all other shields are down (energy setting zero).
On the left of the "TFR" button, right above the Shields Display is a red light. This light flashes when all shields have collapsed (during an attack of course). See the first picture on this page.
